What is Transflective lcd

Transflective lcd combined the function of transmissive lcd and reflective lcd, it has transmissive lcd function and reflective function in the same time. when in dark environment, the transmissive function would be in effection, that is it must need to backlight when in display, while in high bright environment, especially for the environment brightness higher than backlight brightness, the reflective mode would be in effection. the environment light would be go through the lcd cell and reflect again through the reflective film on the lcd polarizer, so no need the help of backlight, the lcd could be viewing via the environment light, it would be power saving mode in the reflective mode, it is very suitable for outdoor application.

Transflective lcd could be used indoor and outdoor. In dim ambient light or at night a backlight allows reading of the display in its transmissive mode. Digital time displays in alarm clocks for bedrooms may also work this way. The backlighting is dim, so that the display is comfortably readable at night. Some 21st century smartwatches use transflective LCDs.

When an illuminance sensor is added for control of the backlight, such a transflective LCD can be read over a wide range of illuminance levels. This technique is often found in automotive instrumentation. In portable electronic devices the transflective mode of operation helps to save battery charge, since in bright environments no backlighting is required.

Transflective TFT also has a transparent reflector inside tft lcd cell that is in front of the backlight. The incoming light is reflected and used to illuminate the TFT display. Transflective TFT have both "transmissive" and "reflective" modes.
